Advisory & Tips from a Breeder's Stand Point

Kitten: What’s Safe & What’s Not

Health

It is advised to take your kitten to the veterinarian within 48 hours of purchase to ensure its health. Should your kitten show any signs of illness, immediately contact your veterinarian and adhere to their advice. Always consult your vet if you notice anything concerning.

Reputable Veterinarian

It's crucial to find a reputable veterinarian experienced with Sphynx/Bambino cats to advocate for your pet's medical needs.

Over Vaccinating

We do not recommend over-vaccinating our kittens. Additional vaccines, including Rabies, Feline Leukemia (FeLV), and extra FVRCP doses beyond 16 weeks, are not advised.

Over-vaccination can carry health risks, including: development of severe allergies, sarcomas, and other long-term health issues.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

HCM is a heart condition that can affect Sphynx cats. It may not show obvious symptoms early on, so regular monitoring is important.

Your veterinarian may recommend annual heart check-ups, including echocardiograms or ultrasounds to ensure your cat’s heart is healthy. Even though we annually screen our adults, HCM is still not fully understood and we advise your cat to see a Registered Cardiologist after 1 year of age.

Dental

Sphynx cats are prone to brown stains on their teeth. This is normal and not a medical disease.

Baby teeth usually fall out between 6–12 months. During this time, kittens may teethe and experience mild discomfort.

Adult dental care is important: professional cleanings help prevent calcium buildup that can irritate gums.

Dental X-rays are recommended to confirm there are no underlying issues. Brown stains in adult cats are usually just surface stains and not indicative of decay. Pet insurance*

Silica Cat Litter

This type of litter is toxic especially for kittens. Sphynxdo not have nose hair or eye lashes. Silica beads can stick to wet areas such as: Eyes, Nose / airway, Mouth / saliva. Kittens may lick or ingest it, which can cause: Burning or irritation, Extreme salty taste, Dehydration when swallowed, Respiratory issues.

Important: Kittens are especially prone to eating or inhaling this litter. For their safety, we strongly recommend using alternative litter until the kitten is older and supervised.

Litter box

It's important to clean your cat's litter box daily.  This way you can monitor how your cats health, keep poop smell at a minimum and prevent bacteria from building up.

The best natural options are wood pellets, clay litter, or other natural products.

Litter boxes with a flap for front door - remove the flap. Sphynx do not like to push these open.

Temperature & Environment

Sphynx cats being hairless, need special attention to stay warm, due to lack of fur - they get cold easily. It's essential to provide warm spots in the home for them to retreat to when they're cold.

A useful guideline is that if you're feeling cold, they probably are too. Items like sweaters, shirts, space heaters, and heated beds, including enclosed ones, are all beneficial in meeting their warmth requirements. This breed can become ill if exposed to consistently cold temperatures.

Skin Care

Sphynx cats have hairless skin similar to humans which means their skin shows everything. They can develop:

Hives or rashes, Scratches or bites, Rug burn or cuts, Burns or blackheads, Dry or irritated skin.

Because their skin is so exposed, it can be challenging to determine the exact cause of a skin issue. Careful observation, gentle cleaning and some problem solving can help figure out root cause.  Careful not to over bath as this causes dry flakey skin.

Bathing

Bi weekly baths or using a wet cloth are necessary to remove oils and prevent skin irritation. Do not get water in ears, and careful washing face around eyes.

Clean ears weekly. Use a Q-tip for ears but go no deeper then you can see.

Trim nails every few days and monitor paw pads for dirt or buildup. Can gently pull back skin around nails to expose the full nail and clean gently.

Eyes

Sphynx do not have eyelashes so it is possible for clear fabrics to get into cats eye, just like an eyelash gets in ours. Gently remove if you notice.

Sphynx can have brown eye discharge, this is typical; however, yellow or green discharge, leaky watery eyes is a sign of concern. These could be signs of infection, illness or trauma. Please consult vet.

Hydration

Always provide fresh water. High grade wet food helps maintain hydration and urinary health.

Diet & Nutrition

Sphynx cats do best on a stable, high-quality diet. Avoid switching foods too often, as frequent changes can cause digestive upset, diarrhea, or IBS. Gradual transitions are safest when a change is necessary.

Monitor weight — Spayed/ Neutered Sphynx are prone to muscle wasting if underfed and weight gain if overfed.

Feeding

Sphynx cats due to their lack of fur, expend more energy and thus require high-quality cat food to stay healthy. Inexpensive brands may not meet the nutritional needs. It's advisable to provide a measured amount of dry food and fresh water available at all times.

Royal Canin is widely available in many pet stores.

Research cat food and treats thoroughly. Brands like Temptations, Whiskas, Blue Buffalo are not good.

Low Quality Food

Low-quality food can lead to health and dental problems and may even be linked to heart issues like HCM. Choosing high-quality, balanced food is always best for your cat’s health.

Dairy

Never give your cat milk or other dairy products. They can cause digestive upset, including bloating and diarrhea. In severe cases, extreme diarrhea can lead to dehydration and even death if not treated promptly.

Raw Pork

Never feed raw pork - this meat has a high chance of carrying parasites and bacteria.

You can feed your sphynx raw meat, just make sure its frozen before, thaw it out and feed right after thawing. Never keep in fridge thawed as this can grow bacteria and cause stomach upset.

De-worming every 4 months.

Exercise

Sphynx cats are highly social and can be energetic. They thrive on receiving ample attention and require daily exercise. An exercise wheel for cats can be a fantastic addition to their routine. Additionally, they are fond of playing with cat fishing toys and other interactive toys.

Companionship

In the world of Sphynx cats, the motto "the more, the merrier" can hold true. These hairless wonders thrive in pairs or alongside other furry friends. Known for their sociable nature, they seamlessly blend into the mix, proving that sometimes two is indeed better than one.

String & Dangling Object Safety

Long strings, cords, or dangling toys can be very dangerous for kittens and cats. They may get tangled, strangled, or swallow pieces, which can lead to serious injury or even death.

Always supervise play with string-like objects, and keep long cords, yarn, or loose decorations out of reach when unsupervised.

Washing Machine & Dryer Safety

Kittens and cats are naturally curious and may hide in laundry baskets, washers, or dryers. Always check inside before running machines. Even a brief trip inside can cause serious injury or death.

Keep doors closed when not in use and supervise laundry areas.

Fragrance

Avoid using strongly-scented detergents, fabric softeners, or plug-in air fresheners. These can lead to respiratory and skin problems in cats and kittens, particularly with their clothing and bedding. Since they cannot undress themselves, exposure to these substances could result in coughing, skin hives, and symptoms of asthma.

Weekly washing of bedding is highly suggested to prevent skin developing hives/rashes from dirt build up

Plants

Exercise caution regarding the plants your cats can access; it's advisable to research which plants are safe for pets and move toxic ones out of reach or not in home.

Outside

Exercise caution when taking your cats outdoors; always keep them on a leash. Sphynx Cats, unlike their furry counterparts, require constant supervision. They can accompany you on travels and camping trips, but never lose sight of them.

Additionally, be mindful of open doors and unscreened windows.

In Canada's chilly winters, it's best to keep them indoors unless they're wrapped up from head to toe with supervision!
